The figures created by Lisa Larson are very popular in Scandinavian countries. The shown figure of the "Japanese woman " is one of the ABC - women series created in 1958.
Hight - 28 cm. Hand-painted stoneware.
The auction price of this piece in perfect condition may vary from 350 to 650 Euros depending on the conjuncture and color variation of the piece. The one with broken head like this sells usually for around 150 -180 Euros…
The figure fell once and her head broke off. The head was glued to its place with some glue-like substance that became reddish-brown with time(image 5) ..The task was simply to remove the old glue, clean the thing up and to reattach the broken pieces together making the restoration as close to its original state as possible….
On the images bellow : the old glue removed ,both surfaces cleaned up and consolidated with some consolidating solution(img. 6 and 7) . Stoneware is a porous substance and immediate application of the epoxies should be avoided. First ,one should seal the surfaces up with special "consolidant " used in conservation of porcelain and ceramics. ..The "consolidant "also makes it much easier to remove the restorations afterwards if need be ..
After attaching the head to the body with epoxy based glue on top of consolidant (img.8), I mixed up some paste matching in color to fill up the crack area. In front the crack line was visually uneven . The edge on the head was apparently protruding slightly over and above the lower edge on the neck line .
This is a problem related to high fired wares, where the high temperatures create internal tensions and torque. When broken, these tensions relax and distort the original shape -this is the effect known as "springing".
In this case there are two ways to solve this problem:
1) To work around it and to build up some paste in the area to even the edges…
2)To grind the surface with a grinding stone and thus to make the area even..
I chose ,of course, the first way. No further damage to the body of the object!
Several thin layers of paste were applied and polished to make the surface as even as possible. Not an easy task as it seems.(img.9,10,11)
The imitation of the surface texture was the next step(img.12). The solvent based Glaze with some mixed in ingredients was applied over the restored area and polished with appropriate abrasive..
The damaged colored areas were retouched and polished.
The restoration is complete. (img.13 - 16 )
